Got your mates?

The Legal Stuff

  • If you are a driver or a front seat passenger in a car you must wear a seat belt.
  • Children under the age of 14 travelling in a car must use a seatbelt with a suitable child restraint. As a driver, it's your legal responsibility to make sure this happens.
  • If you're in the back of a car, you must also use seat belts if they are fitted. It is the responsibility of you as a passenger to make sure that you are using a seat belt.
  • If you're not paying proper attention to the road and not controlling your car, you could be prosecuted for driving carelessly or dangerously - being distracted by your mates is not an excuse.
  • Under the New Driver Act, if you’re a new driver and clock up six or more penalty points in the first two years, you'll lose your licence and go back to learner status, then have to take the theory and practical tests all over again.
