  • If you hit a pedestrian while driving at 30mph, the survival chance is 80%. But if you hit a pedestrian while driving at 40mph, the pedestrian's chances of dying rises to 90%.
  • Driving too fast plays a part in over 1,000 deaths and over 38,000 injuries every year.
  • Two out of three crashes where people are killed or injured happen on roads where the speed limit is no more than 40mph.
  • Being caught breaking the speed limit carries a penalty of between three and six penalty points or disqualification - so, under the New Drivers Act, if you passed your test in the last two years, you could lose your licence instantly and go back to being a Learner.
