Heavier traffic and higher speeds mean you need to be more alert on motorways. If you're new to motorway driving, the simple tips below could help:
1. Plan your journey
Check your vehicle is roadworthy before you start out – you really don't want to break down - and if you are driving long distances, take plenty of breaks.
2. Keep to the left lane except when overtaking
Don’t hog the middle lane. Drive sensibly and be aware of other drivers.
3. Keep your distance
Always keep a two second gap between you and the vehicle in front. Watch when the vehicle in front passes an object beside the road, then say "Only a fool breaks the two second rule", this takes about two seconds. If you pass the same object before you've finished the saying, you're too close.
Remember, in the wet, stopping distances double and they can be a much as ten times more on icy roads.
